Who is L.B. Brown? Find Out Next Weekend

I have to start this post with a confession. I have lived in Polk County my whole life and I did not know who L.B. Brown was until recently. Now that I do know, I wish I would have found out more about him earlier in my life because he was a fascinating person and a great American. His house still stands in Bartow and is the centerpiece of the festival that bares his name. If you are like me and don’t know Brown’s great story, you should definitely check out the 9th Annual L.B. Brown Festival in Bartow February 13-15. It is a weekend full of music, speakers and history that you won’t want to miss. This year’s theme is “Our Caribbean Connection” and there will be a a Buffalo Soldier presentation by re-enactor Lee Coffee Jr., a presentation on the history of the Caribbean Islands, a fashion show that includes hair fashions and elephant rides for the kids.

The Ledger has a great article today detailing all that will go on next weekend and you can also visit the official website for all the information and photos of past events. If you get the chance to experience the festival next weekend, be sure to let us know what you thought.

What a warm and wonderful story. Thank you for recognizing that Mr. Brown was a true American and the eye for what a community must do to be a community. I like you was unaware of this history for a long time. Just think about all the other history that has yet to make it in our American History books. The American Community must foster diversity, not just at school or the work place but the HISTORY BOOKS. I am so proud that you thought enough to write about this. Peace and Love
