A Movie Under the Stars: Silver Moon Drive-In

Love a night at the movies, but hate the steep price tag? Last week marked the 79th anniversary of the drive-in movie theater. There are less than a dozen of these in the state of Florida, but did you know we have one of these nostalgic gems right here in Polk County?
The Silver Moon Drive-In in Lakeland opened in 1948 and is still going strong today. Seven nights a week, rain or shine, first-run movies are shown on two screens with double features. Though admission was originally only 35 cents when it first opened, it’s still an affordable outing: $4 for ages 10 and up, and $1 for children 4-9. Come early to grab one of the in-car speakers, or simply enjoy the movie through your FM radio.
The Silver Moon has a full snack bar. Enjoy drive-in favorites like popcorn or a dill pickle, or come hungry and enjoy some of their homemade pizza. Classics like hot dogs, corn dogs, and nachos are also available. With so many options, there’s sure to be something for everyone in your car. While you wait (all food is freshly prepared), take a look at the historic drive-in photos!
On weekend mornings, the grounds are transformed into the Swap Shop, where you can buy antiques, produce, and more! The gates open at 5am, with free parking and admission. Before you start shopping, why not enjoy a hot cup of coffee and a breakfast sandwich?
