Meredith Spresser is a Polk County girl – born and bred – who started learning how to draw as soon as she was old enough to hold a pencil. Her most vivid childhood memories are of sitting in iHOP or Sambo’s with her father and learning how to draw circle people on the backs of the placemats. She graduated from Harrison School of the Arts in 1994 and from USF with a BA in Studio Art in 1999. From 2000-2007, she worked as a Curatorial Assistant at Polk Museum of Art, and since January of 2007, she has been the PR & Marketing Manager for the Museum. The arts are an integral part of her entire life, not just her professional career. Her father is an amateur artist; her sister is a professional opera singer and voice coach; her brother is an amateur photographer; her former brother-in-law is a percussionist and drum instructor; and her nephew… well, as dramatic as he can be, he’s bound to go into the theater. At age 27, she started taking ballet at Florida Dance Theatre, with not a day of training prior, and recently performed in her very first dance recital ever. She lives in Lakeland with her parents, and she has two cats, one of which has a record at the Polk County Sherriff’s Department. Mugshot and everything.

Polk Museum of Art’s upcoming exhibition, The Surreal Photography of Jerry Uelsmann, is certain to be a favorite among people who love photography or surrealism. The artist, Jerry Uelsmann, is a former University of Florida photography professor, and he’s been creating dream-like images in his darkroom longer than Photoshop has been around!

Once again, Polk County is proving that we’ve got more going for us than orange groves and cow pastures (although, there is something good to be said about both of those things). Three of our arts organizations have been nominated for Nickelodeon Parents’ Pick Awards in the Tampa Area: Polk Museum of Art, Explorations V [...]

I ran into a colleague from Bok Tower Gardens at a meeting yesterday, and she was bubbling over about their Summer Music Series. The first one is next Saturday, June 27 at 7:30pm and will feature folk singer Rod MacDonald. I understand that seating is cabaret style, and you can show up early for an [...]

Polk Museum of Art has a new toy in its lobby – an Art-O-Mat! It’s an old cigarette machine that has been refurbished to vend original pieces of art for $5 each (+ tax). This is one of three Art-O-Mats in the state. The other two are in Miami.
Clark Whittington, the founder of Art-O-Mat, will be at the Museum on [...]

Polk Museum of Art is opening two new exhibitions next Saturday featuring three artists. The “feel” of the exhibitions are very different. The larger one, Silver Linings: Delicate Drawings by Carol Prusa, is very cool and almost scientific while All Natural: Organic Forms by Akiko Sugiyama and Jean Yao seems warmer and, …well… more natural…

I’ve recently found out about a new theatre company in Lakeland that is planning to bring edgy, raw, and sometimes controversial productions to our area. Sounds like some good art to me! Check out my post on arts.lakelandlocal.com for more info and to learn about their first offering (that starts tonight!).
