I really didn’t know what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised.  I had called my mother about an hour before and asked if she would like to go.  I also suggested that she could buy dinner for us afterward.  She laughed and obliged.  Thank you Mom.

My mother and I wandered around the exhibit for about 20 minutes before Hughes, a professor of art at The University of Texas at Tyler, spoke briefly about his new works.  The artist has entitled the new body of work Neocryptofunk.  What a cool new word.  All of the new sculptures on exhibit were fabricated from steel during the recent holiday break.  View a few of the detail images from Neocryptofunk on the artists website.

I thoroughly enjoyed the exhibit and recommend making a special visit to Melvin Gallery at Florida Southern College before it closes on February 24.  Gallery hours are Monday-Friday from 9am-4pm when school is in session.

While you are there, stop by the “Child of the Sun” Visitor Center located in the William M. Hollis Exhibition and Seminar Room.  It’s a short walk from Melvin Gallery.  Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida is home to the largest one-site-collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture in the world.  View photos of Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Child of the Sun” architecture on the beautiful campus by clicking here.

I’m a proud 1999 graduate of Florida Southern College. Although Davenport always appears as a large postal area in Central Florida, the small town itself is situated on the 17/92 about 5 miles from Haines city. On Friday and Saturday of last week, their Horse Creek Festival was held in the central park of this small town.
With local artists displaying their paintings, wood carvings and ceramic arts, there was plenty for visitors to see and do.

Many of the displays were centred around the small lake in the centre of town, and one of the most fascinating displays had the cowboys showing off their lasso skills and whip cracking. Their horses were patiently waiting in the shade, and there were some beef cattle chewing the cud across the other side of the camp.

It was beans for lunch on Saturday, cooked over an open fire. Actually it looked really tasty, with thick slices of bread toasted over the flames.
Close by the camp was the Cowboy storyteller, whose array of artifacts behind his seat bore testament to the travels he had made. From an old leather saddle to quilts and buffalo skulls, this man had seen an interesting life and collected many stories that had been handed down since the eraly days of the settlers. One of his stories that really impressed me was that of the old widow woman living way back in the swamp. He stumbled upon her shack while he was travelling through the swamp lands and being really thirsty, knocked on her door and asked if he could have a drink of water. She invited him in and he was surprised to see a a barrel of rainwater with a gourd hanging alongside it. The gourd was particularly nasty looking; being mouldy and green around the edges from the many times it had been used for travellers to drink from. Our story teller said he was shocked and somewhat reluctant to drink from the gourd but was very thirsty so made up his mind to use the gourd. Lifting it up full of water, he noticed a hole in the longer thinner part of the gourd and realised that he could pour water into his mouth without touching the sides of the gourd that had been used by so many others.
Pouring water from the end of the gourd into his mouth, he became aware of the old woman smiling, and asked her what was wrong; nothing , she had replied, you and me are the only ones to have figured that out!
I could have spent much more time listening to this traditional story teller entertaining the children with his stories of the wild animals. Many of the stories obviously had American Indian origins.
However it was time to move on and see some of the other fascinating arts that were being shown to the public. Quite apart from the displays of regular paintings, oil and watercolours, there were other forms of art; one gentleman was displaying paintings made of burning with a hot iron. His works were full of details and he specialised in art works of the Civil War.
All of this fine detail had been achieved with hot irons burnt into the balsa wood.
He told me that it took somewhere in the region of 40 hours to complete one picture!
Cookery is an art too, so I made my way to the Baking competition tables, where cakes had to be baked with a Citrus theme, and the recipes had to be original. Mouthwatering cakes were set out with their recipes alongside them and obviously oneor two had won their blue ribands

Moving quickly on, I walked to the Wood carvers room; again greeted by the most amazing wood carvings of animals and insects.
I spoke to one of the carvers, all from the Lake Placid Wood Carvers Guild, and he explained that he used Laurel wood for his subjects – at the time he was carving a large bird, and laurel is a non-splintering type of wood so very useful for carvers to use.

Having spent some time with the wood carvings, it was time to take a look at some of the other displays that were edging the lake front. Lots of various art and artists, as well as a Polk County wildlife officer with a small alligator for brave children to touch. Another display with an child friendly area was that of the snake handlers; kids could handle a small python, or a baby king snake, and try their hand at drawing butterflies and other insects.
There were guided tours of the historical part of the town, and demonstrations of quilt making. I also watched a demonstration of clogging, a country dance style similar to Irish dancing.
The Festival ran for two days, and I found it all very interesting ; certainly there was enough to keep me entertained for several hours. Eventually though my stomach reminded me it needed something to eat, so wandering round the food vendors I came across a cupcake stand. Guess what…………. It was delicious!!!

October is National Arts & Humanities Month and Polk County is celebrating in a big way with more than 100 arts and cultural activities happening in the Heart of the Arts during the month.

Friday, October 21st

Oct 21 Ghosts of Bartow Walking Tours, 9 to 11 pm at Polk County Historical Museum, Bartow. $25.00 includes a light reception, Polk Proud T-shirt and commemorative photograph. Not recommended for ages 10 & under.Tickets must be purchased in advance at the Museum prior to the day of the event.

Oct 21: Ask a Gardener from 10 to noon.  Get advice from gardening experts. Included with admission to Bok Tower Gardens, Lake Wales. Subject to change pending weather. (General: $12/Ages 5-12: $3)

Oct 21: ISO Fall Pops Concert FREE Orchestra concert at 7:30 p.m. in Munn Park. This concert kicks off the Hispanic Festival with an all Latin program.  Pre-concert activities begin at 6:00pm.

Oct 21: Red, White & the Blues 2011 | 6:30pm – 11pm. The Museum’s 10th annual wine tasting and blues concert featuring veteran bluesman Joe Louis Walker, Tampa Bay blues artist Selwyn Birchwood, great food, wine and craft beers. Tickets: $75 and $30

Oct 21: Florida Dance Dinner Fundraiser. Food served: 5-7pm at Lake Mirror Promenade. Dinner is Hamburger or Hotdog, Baked Beans & Chips, sponsored by Woodmen of the World. Presale tickets at FDT are $4. Tickets are $6 at event. Pics on the Promenade: “Beauty & the Beast” begins at dusk.

]]> http://sunnycentralflorida.com/2011/10/21/oct-21-23-this-weekend-in-floridas-heart-of-the-arts/feed/ 1 A Visit to “Blacklight by Al Kriston” http://sunnycentralflorida.com/2011/10/14/a-visit-to-blacklight-by-al-kriston/ http://sunnycentralflorida.com/2011/10/14/a-visit-to-blacklight-by-al-kriston/#comments Sat, 15 Oct 2011 01:11:26 +0000 Bev http://sunnycentralflorida.com/?p=1351 I took a short break on Thursday to walk through ”Blacklight by Al Kriston” currently on exhibit in Melvin Gallery at Florida Southern College.  I was truly impressed by the refinement and quality of every sculpture, all of which show the human form in motion.  The open space and gallery layout offer the viewer an opportunity to admire each and every one of the whimsical and graceful blacklight sculptures, the beautifully refined bronze and other media sculptures.  This exhibit is of a quality I would expect to see in museums in Chicago, New York, Boston or San Francisco.  And, it is a joy knowing the sculptures were created by a Winter Haven resident.

This was the most enjoyable 30 minute break I’ve taken in a long time.  I highly recommend seeing “Blacklight by Al Kriston” before it closes. Find out for yourself, decide what you like and what you think.  You will definitely leave inspired and smiling.

On exhibit through October 28: Blacklight by Al Kriston. Melvin Gallery at Florida Southern College presents Winter Haven resident Al Kriston’s award winning work and impressive display of blacklight sculpture. When College is in session, the Melvin Gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Saturday, October 1st

7pm & 10pm: Le Cabaret de Polk at the Historic Polk Theatre inLakeland. The songs of Johnny Cash performed by some of your favorite local artists: Brian Sutherland, Craig Morby, Sarah Machinia, Kimberly Milton, and Sharon Clark. Directed by Paul Hughes. Musical director Patrick Fleitz.

2:30pm & 7:30pm: The Full Monty at Theatre Winter Haven.  At heart, a musical comedy, this is the most fun you can have when others take their clothes off. In fact, you may laugh so hard you can hardly “bare” it. Katrina Ploof directs the action with Kevin Davis choreographing.

10am – Noon: Lake Wales Arts Council hosts a Meet the Highwaymen and painting demo by Florida Highwayman Robert Lewis.  Highwaymen Al Black and Issac Knight will also be in attendance. Bob Beatty’s Florida’s Highwaymen, Legendary Landscapes books are available at the Arts Center.  This event is the perfect time to purchase a book and have it signed! Paintings by all three Highwaymen will be available for sale. There is no admission charge for this event but donations are always appreciated.

10am – 4pm (bring your own lunch): Beginning Photography – Point & Shoot at Polk Museum of Art with instructor Gregory Mills. Cost: $35 Members, $50 Non-Members (Pre-registration Required)

10:30am – Noon: Family Fun Workshop – Drawing at the Polk Museum of Art. A safe, fun environment for families to participate together in hands-on activities led by an art educator. FREE for everyone.

The first event of the Imperial Symphony Orchestra’s 2011-2012 Season. RAW TV: Live Shows in Bolin Studio

Southeastern University’s RAW TV, is a live, student-produced, television talk show that targets young adults. The mission of RAW TV, whose acronym stands for “Real And Willing,” is to openly discuss relevant issues and topics with its guests. Thursday Films in the Visitor’s Center are included with general admission of $10 for adults and $3 for children ages 5-12.
