I ran into a colleague from Bok Tower Gardens at a meeting yesterday, and she was bubbling over about their Summer Music Series. The first one is next Saturday, June 27 at 7:30pm and will feature folk singer Rod MacDonald. I understand that seating is cabaret style, and you can show up early for an optional prepaid dinner.

Future concerts will include dixieland music by the Good Times Jazz Band on July 25; 50s and 60s music with Elivis impersonator Dwight Icenhower and The Repeatles on August 22; and traditional Appalachian music by Mustang Sally and the Hamjos on September 11.

All of the performances start at 7:30pm and tickets are $15 ahead of time, or $20 the day of the event. The optional dinner starts at 5:45pm in the Blue Palmetto Cafe and cost $15.50 for Bok Tower members or $17 for non-members.

For tickets and more info, visit the Live at the Gardens page on their website.

If you are a man reading this post, hopefully it will give you some ideas and keep you out of trouble on Mother’s Day. If you are a mom reading this post, hopefully it will give you some suggestions to pass along to the man in your life who has no idea what to get you or do. Here is a rundown of some special places to go and things to do with mom on this Mother’s Day weekend:

Mid Florida Mayfaire By The Lake -Saturday and Sunday at Lake Morton in Lakeland – This is always a fun event that the whole family can enjoy. It isn’t just for art lovers–plus, you can even pick up a great Mother’s Day present here! Be sure to check out the Mayfaire Saturday night street party at Lake Mirror too. The hours for the Mayfaire by the Lake are 10am-5pm each day. Check out the official website for all the information.

Bok Tower Gardens Mother’s Day Carillon Concerts- Sunday at 1pm and 3pm in Lake Wales – The weather looks good this weekend, so it will be perfect for a stroll through Bok Tower Gardens and you can even sit and listen to the special Mother’s Day Carillon Concerts. Sounds like a great plan for mom’s big day.

Magic Tree House: The Musical- Saturday at 11am and 2pm at The Lakeland Center – This would be a great way to start your Mother’s Day weekend. Take in either the late morning show or the matinee and then take the half mile ride to Lake Morton to see the Mayfaire by the Lake. Based on Mary Pope Osborne’s beloved series of children’s books, this musical transports Jack and Annie’s adventures onto the stage to create a theatrical event for the entire family. For ticket information, go to The Lakeland Center’s website.

Picasso’s Cup Art Cafe- 11am-7pm at Lakeside Village in Lakeland – Bring mom to Picasso’s Cup to paint some pottery. This is always a fun day out and it will make it even better to share with your mom on Mother’s Day. Or, if you are really lazy and put off getting a gift until the actual holiday, you can go to Picasso’s Cup and make something yourself. Moms are treated to a FREE studio session ($6.50 value) and a complimentary beverage from Tea Largo next door.

Well, there yuou go. We are now officially not responsible foryou forgetting to celebrate this holiday with your mom. If you have any other suggestions or know of anything else going on this weekend for Mother’s Day, let us know.

In 2009, Bok Tower Gardens is going to give you a unique chance to visit “under the stars” for the 2009 Moonlight Carillon Concert series beginning January 9 at 7:30 p.m. It’s a unique opportunity to visit the Gardens after normal operating hours for half-price admission and have a light dinner at the Blue Palmetto Café which will remain open until 7:30 p.m.

The hour-long concert will feature carillonneur William De Turk performing a variety of music including selections from the “Sound of Music.” Visitors can view De Turk’s performance on the video monitor located behind the Japanese Lantern and meet him by the Information Booth after the performance.

Since Bok is rarely open at night, you will see something unique during the concert series: moonlight streaming through moss-draped trees and flambeaux illuminating the pathways. The 2009 Moonlight Carillon Concert series continues February 7, March 15 and April 7 at 7:30 p.m.

After 5 p.m., admission is $5 for adults and $1.50 for children ages 5-12. Children under age 5 and members are admitted free. The Blue Palmetto Café and Gift Shop will be open until 7:30 p.m. The Visitor Center will remain open until 9 p.m. For more information, call 863-676-1408 or visit the Bok Tower website for more information.

As the summer approaches and families begin planning their vacations, Florida residents have even more reason to stay close to home this summer. Polk County attractions have come together to present the Central Florida Play Pass. The 7-day ticket will be $69.95 (plus tax) for adults and $39.95 (plus tax) for children (ages 3-9) and will be good for seven consecutive days from the date of first use at Cypress Gardens, Bok Tower Gardens, Fantasy of Flight, The Florida Air Museum, Explorations V Children’s Museum, USA Waterski Hall of Fame and the Polk Museum of Art. The tickets will be available online, at Polk County’s Visitor Information Center, Polk Outpost 27 (located on Highway 27, a half mile south of I-4 at Exit 55) and at AAA Travel offices throughout Florida. If you are a AAA member, you can get an even better deal when you purchase the Play Pass at the AAA office. One warning though: Don’t try to show up at any of the attractions or museums and purchase the Play Pass there…they will not be available at the participating locations. The Play Pass will be available from May31-September 30. It certainly sounds like a great deal, especially since you can’t even get a full tank of gas for $70!
