The Detroit Tigers, who are celebrating their 76th Spring Training season in Polk County, will join the Spring Training celebration with a display at Polk Outpost 27 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. with giveaways, a sports themed bounce house for kids, games, a baseball movie, free popcorn and an appearance by the Lakeland Flying Tigers mascot, Ace. Visitors to the event will also be able to register for two grand prize drawings: one prize will be four tickets to see the Tigers play the Atlanta Braves on March 4 at Joker Marchant Stadium and the other will be a game-used Tigers jersey. Visitors who bring canned goods for local food banks will also be entered into a drawing for a $50 Wal-Mart gift card.

Baseball fans that can’t get enough of the national pastime on February 18 can enjoy baseball themed exhibits and memorabilia from February 11-19 at Polk Outpost 27. While at Polk Outpost 27, visitors will also be able to get all the latest information on the 2012 Spring Training season including schedules, Spring Training guides and other baseball information including complete schedules for the 2012 RussMatt Baseball Central Florida Collegiate Invitational that features more than 200 college baseball teams competing in Polk County from mid-February through the end of March.

All of the events and displays are free of charge and will be open to the public during normal hours. Polk Outpost 27 is open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and is located on Highway 27 a half-mile South of I-4 at Exit 55. For more information call Polk Outpost 27 at 863-420-2586.

The first 2,000 fans will receive a free grocery tote compliments of The Ledger Media Group. The first 100 new Ledger subscribers will be given Ledger Media Group t-shirts.  Fans can register to win great prizes including travel trips, gift baskets, gift cards and more throughout the game.  A fan will also have a chance to win a Fiat if a Flying Tigers player hits a grand slam in the seventh inning.  The Flying Tigers will be wearing special tropical jerseys during the game and fans are encouraged to dress for the occasion as well wearing flip-flops and tropical shirts.

Sunset Celebration Sponsored by The Ledger Media Group and Budweiser
Following the game the Flying Tigers will be turning the berm into a Key West themed party.  There will be live island-themed music by Captain Josh as well as street performers, frisbee dogs, a pig roast and much more.  There will be drink and food specials on the berm all night.  Polk County’s Parrot Head Club, Pirates on the Ridge, will be helping to get the party started.

They are set to begin their 60th season in the FSL and 44th as a Detroit Tigers minor league affiliate.  Lakeland first began playing in the FSL in 1919. The Flying Tigers will open the season on the road Thursday, April 8 in Tampa to take on the FSL champion Yankees and home fans will get their first look at the team when the Flying Tigers host Tampa on Friday, April 9 at 7:00 p.m. at Joker Marchant Stadium.  There will be special pre-game activities and ceremonies, BirdZerk, one of the widest and craziest shows in sports, will entertain fans during the game and there will be a spectacular post-game fireworks show.
The schedule is highlighted with home games on the 4th of July, Armed Forces Day, and several education day games.  A full promotional calendar will be released at a later date. The walk will take place right before the Flying Tigers play the Daytona Cubs at 7pm and will honor  active, retired and fallen military veterans, along with law enforcement, firefighters and EMT heroes who serve faithfully in Polk County while reflecting on the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd will be on hand with remarks during the ceremony.

All active and retired military, and members of the law enforcement, fire and EMT community along with their families will be able to attend the event for free. Additionally, anyone registering for the Freedom Walk will enter at no charge. Participation in the walk is not required to enter for the ceremony or the Flying Tigers game.

Registration for the walk begins at 5 p.m. with all Freedom Walk participants enjoying hamburgers and hot dogs, compliments of Texas Cattle Company. The Freedom Walk will begin at 6 p.m. with participants making three trips around the field – roughly a mile in length – with walkers finishing at home plate. Directly following the walk, special recognition will be given to all heroes present, with other festivities on hand throughout the evening.

Several communities around Polk County have celebrations planned, so check this list before you head out to make your plans to celebrate July 4.

Haines City – Thunder on the Ridge (July 4 from Noon-10pm): The 2009 Thunder on the Ridge Extravaganza will be bigger and better than ever as the city celebrates the grand opening of  the new Lake Eva Community Park with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The park features a new aquatic center, two playgrounds, lighted tennis and basketball courts, a band shell for concerts, and a lakefront banquet facility.There will be plenty of craft and food vendors, children’s activities, and entertainment to keep visitors of all ages busy throughout the day beginning at Noon.  The highlight of the night (besides Polk County’s largest fireworks display, of course) will be a live performance by The Commodores. Lakeland – Red, White & Kaboom (July 3 at 6pm): Red, White & Kaboom will take place around the Lake Mirror Promenade and will feature the pop/rock sounds of the popular local band, MillHopper. The band will play three sets of music ending at 9:00 p.m. to a breathtaking display of fireworks over Lake Mirror. As part of this year’s celebration, the city of Lakeland is asking for a canned food item from everyone who attends the free event. There will be several locations throughout Lake Mirror Park that will be accepting the canned food donations. There will be a variety of food and drink vendors around Lake Mirror so bring a blanket and enjoy the live music and a dramatic display of fireworks over the lake. Lakeland – Lakeland Flying Tigers vs. Tampa Yankees (July 4 at 5pm): There is no better way to celebrate America, the summer and the 4th of July than watching a baseball game followed by a huge fireworks display over Joker Marchant Stadium. In what has become a 4th of July tradition, the Lakeland Flying Tigers will host the July 4th game and set off a dazzling display of fireworks at 9pm, following the game. Get your tickets early as this game is a tough ticket to get. Find out more.

Winter Haven – Rockin’ Freedom Fest (July 3 at 7pm): Lake Silver will be the backdrop for Winter haven’s 4th of July celebration. Live music by the band Signal Zero will lead up to the large fireworks display over Lake Silver at 9:30pm. There will be food vendors and lots of entertainment for the kids. Find out more.

Winter Haven – Cypress Gardens July 4th Celebration (July 4): Both Cypress Gardens and Splash Island Water Park are set to celebrate July 4th with a very special day of entertainment. Cypress Gardens will be open from 9:00am-10:00pm and will feature four ski shows at 1:30 pm, 4:00 pm, and 6:00 pm, with a special “Nighttime Ski Show” at 8:45 pm. The Lakeside Stage (between Ski Stadiums) will also host The Fletcher Cane Band from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm. Then, be sure to stay for the Fireworks on the Lake at the Ski Stadium at 9:15 pm (immediately following the “Nighttime Ski Show). At Splash Island, the park hours will be from 10:00am-10:00pm with a live DJ playing your favorite music from noon-7pm.

This year, Disney’s “Worlds of Fantasy” debuts this weekend in Lakeland. The show will feature Disney favorites from big screen hits “Cars,” “The Little Mermaid,” “The Lion King” and Tinkerbell, all on ice! Don’t ask me how they are going to pull that off, but leave it to Disney to make it happen. Shows will be at 3:30pm and 7:30pm Friday and Saturday at The Lakeland Center’s Jenkins Arena. Tickets for the show are $27 and $19. Seeing how Disney pulls off the magic of making “Cars” character Lightning McQueen speed around the ice will be worth the price of admission alone!

The show starts at 6:30 and reserved seats are still available. As always your park admission includes the concert, but reserved seats will cost you a little more.
